Social support and dysfunction among person with schizophrenia: a cross-sectional study

Abstract

Background: Schizophrenic disorders are characterized by fundamentally and the distortions of thinking and perception also by inappropriate and blunted affect. Psychosocial functioning of the person with schizophrenia is being disrupted due to lack of social support, while, dysfunction implies lowering of functioning irrespective of whether adjustment is made with the circumstances or not. The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of severity of schizophrenic symptoms on psychosocial dysfunction and social support and find out the association and differences between psychosocial dysfunction and social support. Method: The present study was a cross-sectional A group of 60 person with schizophrenia was selected on the basis of convenience. Tools: Socio-demographic datasheet, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, Dysfunctional Analysis Questionnaire, Social Support Questionnaire were used in the present study for obtained the objectives. Results and conclusion: There is no significant difference between the male and female groups on age (p>0.05). The result reveal that no significant difference exists between male and female schizophrenia patients on the clinical variables (p>0.05). The results reveal a significant positive correlation exists between the severity of illness and various domains of domains (p<0.05 and p<0.01) of dysfunctional analysis questionnaire. Significant negative correlation exists between the social support and all dimensions of dysfunctional analysis questionnaire (p<0.01).
