Perceived Parenting Styles, Self-Esteem and Social Competence Among Adolescents in Cochin

This study primarily aims at assessing the perceived parenting style, self-esteem and social competence among adolescents in Cochin. Parenting styles are of four main types which are authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglectful parenting styles. The selected sample consisted of 200 adolescents (140 females and 60 males) with age range kept as 10-19 years with no physical or mental disability residing in Cochin. For data collection, Scale of Parenting Style was used to assess the perceived parenting style, Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale was used to assess the self-esteem and Social Competence Scale was used to assess the social competence of adolescents in Cochin along with demographic sheet. The data collected was analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques like Spearman’s Rank Correlation & Mann Whitney U Test. The results of the present study indicated that there is a significant positive correlation between perceived parenting style and self-esteem; a significant positive correlation between perceived parenting style and social competence and no significant correlation between self-esteem and social competence among adolescents in Cochin. As for tests involving gender differences, there was also no significant differences between perceived parenting style, self-esteem and social competence based on gender among adolescents in Cochin.Metrics
