Abstract

The main objective of the present study was to understand the academic stress and self-efficacy of Hindi and English medium students. A total of 104 students (55 boys, 49 girls; 56 studying in Hindi medium and 48 studying in English medium; 66 feeling comfortable in Hindi medium and 38 feeling comfortable in English medium) aged 18 to 25 years were selected for the study using purposive sampling method. Responses were obtained from the selected students on the Academic Stress Scale and General Self-Efficacy Scale. The result shows a significant difference between the groups of Hindi and English medium students based on academic stress and self-efficacy. In contrast, no significant effects were found of any demographic variables such as gender, age, residence, education level, and occupation of the father on the independent variables of this study. Both academic stress and self-efficacy were found to be significantly higher in Hindi medium students than their counterparts. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was found between academic stress and the self-efficacy of the students.
