Role of Parental Bonding in Anxiety Amongst Young Adults

Abstract

The current investigation focuses on the relationship between parental bonding and anxiety, and finding whether latter can predict anxiety. Spielberger’s (1983) state and trait anxiety inventory and parental bonding scale by Parker, Tupling and Brown (1979) were administered on 200 subjects,100 males and females each. Subjects were selected randomly from the Punjabi University, Patiala between the age of 18-25 years and matched on gender, age and educational qualification. Correlation was applied and to determine whether parental bonding is significant predictors of anxiety, a stepwise multiple regression analysis was computed.  Results indicates a positive correlation between parental over protection and anxiety and an inverse relationship was found between parental care and anxiety. Mother care and mother protection significantly predicted anxiety.
