Abstract

A qualitative research aimed to investigate social media and its impact on young adults’ existence. Sample included 5 college students studying in engineering college. The age of the students varied between 18 and 20years. The data was collected with the help of internet addiction test. The number of hours per week spent by these students on social media was also seen to be at least 26-35 hours. The main problem which the students shared was mostly addiction and an urge to make new friends on social media as they need constant approval and want to be visible, in order to make sure that they exist. Students have developed a fear of missing out when it comes to their visibility.  Thus, it can be concluded that social media has a dual impact on students’ academic performance as well as on their very own existence.
