Abstract

Maladaptive daydreaming, characterized by excessive and uncontrollable fantasizing, has garnered increasing research attention. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of maladaptive daydreaming and negative maladaptive daydreaming among adolescents and young adults and the association between maladaptive daydreaming and emotional neglect. A sample of 118 participants (64 females, 50 males, 4 others) aged 13-30 years completed self-report measures assessing maladaptive daydreaming and emotional neglect. The findings revealed a substantial proportion of participants engaged in maladaptive daydreaming (66.9%) and negative-themed maladaptive daydreaming (33.1%). Findings also indicate a high prevalence of maladaptive daydreaming behaviors and emotional neglect among participants. Correlation and regression analyses indicated a positive association between emotional neglect and maladaptive daydreaming tendencies, with emotional neglect emerging as a significant predictor. However, the modest explanatory power of the regression model (adjusted R² = 0.082) underscored the multifaceted nature of maladaptive daydreaming. These results are consistent with previous research on the potential consequences of childhood adversities and the development of maladaptive coping strategies. While emotional neglect contributes to maladaptive daydreaming, other factors likely play a role, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. Implications for clinical practice, prevention, and future research are discussed, highlighting the significance of tailored interventions and continued exploration of contributing factors to maladaptive daydreaming.
