Abstract

Specific Learning Disability is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 3%-10% of children in India. This study aims to tap the knowledge in young generation who will be our future parents, relatives, teachers, etc. who shall help and support these children since early diagnosis leads to early intervention and early intervention results in better quality of life. For this, a questionnaire was developed which consisted of 26 polar questions, validated by 5 Speech Language Pathologists. It was given to be filled by 203 participants who were of 18-22 years and without sensory-motor deficits. This study excluded participants who belonged to medical and related graduation. Results show that out of 203 participants, only about 48.8% of the participants were aware about the term `Specific Learning Disability’. Chi-square test was performed. Comparison between gender groups revealed that the knowledge of females was significantly more for 9 questions (p value<0.05). No significant difference was obtained when compared between the age groups (p value >0.05). This study concludes that the young generation lacks sufficient awareness and knowledge on Specific Learning Disability. Hence, it is necessary to educate them to promote early identification and intervention.
