The Impact of Mental Health and Trauma on Workplace Productivity in Nigeria: Costs and Implications

Abstract

The impact of mental health issues and trauma on workplace productivity is a growing concern worldwide, and Nigeria is not an exception. With increasing rates of mental health challenges, such as, anxiety, depression, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the Nigerian workforce faces significant barriers to optimal performance. This thematic review explores the costs and implications of mental health and trauma in the Nigerian workplace, examining how these factors hinder productivity, employee engagement, and organizational outcomes. Drawing on existing relevant studies, reviews, case studies, and statistical data, the paper highlights the contributing factors to mental health and trauma in workplace; different examples of of mental health and trauma challenges in the workplace such as economic burden of untreated mental health conditions, including absenteeism, presenteeism, and increased healthcare costs. Additionally, it explores the stigmatization of mental health and trauma, which often prevents individuals from seeking help, further exacerbating the problem. The study also delves into organizational policies and the role of leadership in fostering a supportive work environment for individuals facing mental health challenges. Finally, the paper offers recommendations for addressing mental health and trauma in the workplace, emphasizing the strategies and importance of mental health awareness programs, early intervention, and workplace accommodations to improve productivity and overall well-being. This research aims to underscore the critical need for mental health support in Nigerian organizations, positioning mental health care as integral to workforce efficiency and sustainability.
